5 Best Record Stores in Tennessee

Media Rerun is a family-owned media store located in Murfreesboro, TN. It was opened in 2003 and is still in its original location at the College Central Shopping Center to this day. They sell a wide variety of media, such as vinyl, CDs, cassette tapes, DVDs, video games, musical instruments, and more. In 2016, after the original owner left, Media Rerun began to focus more on vinyl and in-store musical performances. People can also receive guitar lessons or play video games in the store. Media Rerun is a family-oriented place that wants people to feel at home anytime they walk inside.

Shangri-La Records, opened in 1988, is a record store located in Memphis, TN. It is known for its rare records, CDs, DVDs, and books. Shangri-La Records has been referred to as the best record store in the state of Tennessee. They employ musicians and music critics. They also host in-store performances and music festivals. Sherman Wilmott, Shangri-La Records’ original owner, created a record label by the name of Shangri-La Projects, for Memphis musicians. The record store is proud of and proud to be in Memphis and that shows with their selection of music and artists.

Grimey’s New & Preloved Music was founded in 1999 by musician Mike Grimes and is located in Nashville, TN. It, along with Shangri-La Records, are two of the most popular record stores in all of the United States. They are known for their rare selection of music and for their in-store performances. Grimey’s has had to switch locations at least three times because the store keeps growing. They even opened a bookstore and coffee shop with Grimey’s. They have had artists, like the Black Keys, Metallica, and Kacey Musgraves perform at their store.

The Great Escape is a record store located in Nashville, TN. They opened in 1977 and they sell vinyl records, comic books, video games, CDs, DVDs, and more. Their original location was on Broadway and they had regular visitors like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, and Taylor Swift. The Great Escape, including their locations in Kentucky, has more than 20,000 vinyl records in stock.

Third Man Records is a record store located in Nashville, TN that opened in 2009. It was originally just a record label, created by Jack White of the White Stripes, in Detroit, Michigan in 2001. Third Man Records’ goal is to bring “tangibility and spontaneity back into the record business.” Along with the record store, there are offices, a photo studio, a “novelties lounge, a live music venue, and recording studios. Notable people, such as Beck and Conan O’Brien have recorded at Third Man Records.

It was interesting to look more into these record stores and I’ve even been to a few of these stores myself. All of these stores specialize in various forms of media, not just records. It was also interesting to see that many of these record stores allow and promote in store performances. I am seriously thinking about making trips to visit all of these stores and it is exciting to think about.
